Nitrocellulose Plant Refurbishment – Ordnance Factory, Itarsi
Ordnance Factory Itarsi is a government-operated manufacturing unit in Madhya Pradesh, operating as a unit of Munitions India Limited (MIL) under the Ministry of Defence. The factory is one of India’s principal producers of propellants and related materials for the country’s ammunition and missile programmes, operating under stringent safety and quality standards.
Rudraksha was awarded a turnkey contract for the factory’s Nitrocellulose (NC) plant, covering acid storage and preparation, nitration and the centrifuge stages of the NC production process.

The project called for extensive HAZOP (Hazard and Operability) studies, due to the hazards inherent to nitrocellulose handling. Rudraksha worked through this methodically, patiently utilizing a combination of the technical prowess of their own engineering, to plan and execute the refurbishment safely. Inherently Safer Design Principles have been applied to each step of this project. The project supports Ordnance Factory Itarsi’s propellant production capability and contributes to India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat drive toward self-reliant defence manufacturing.
